Play Therapy with Lotería will address how Lotería (Mexican Bingo), a traditional cultural game, can be used in play therapy with the Mexican-American/Latinx population as well as with clients of all cultural backgrounds. This workshop will not only discuss the relevance/significance of the game within the Mexican community but will also demonstrate various interventions which can be used during play therapy sessions with children and youth and their families with low to no cost items.

This workshop will address how Lotería, a traditional cultural game, can be used in play therapy with the Mexican-American/Latinx population as well as with clients of all cultural backgrounds. This workshop will not only discuss the relevance/significance of the game within the Mexican community but will also demonstrate various interventions which can be used during play therapy sessions with children and youth and their families with low to no cost items.

In this training, participants will learn the following:

  • using Lotería in their practices;
  • demonstrating the ability to utilize Lotería as an effective tool in the play therapy process;
  • using  Lotería to discuss a variety of  topics with their clients such as their background, history, family of origin, identities, and beliefs.

Trainer: Cristal Alvarado, LMFT, RPT

Cristal Alvarado is a bilingual Marriage and Family Therapist with an MA in Counseling Psychology and Correctional Emphasis. Cristal is also a Registered Play Therapist. She currently works with at-risk youth and Hayward families at the Hayward Police Department. Cristal previously worked with First Five in East San Jose and has been practicing play therapy since 2017. Cristal provides inclusive play therapy trainings to agencies in the San Francisco Bay area.
She has the innate ability to establish rapport quickly, build trust and effectively communicate in both English and Spanish. Additionally, Cristal finds redwood trees to be inspiring and symbolic; she makes the time to venture out and enjoy hikes and walks amongst the old, resilient, giants.

Target Audience
This course is designed for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, LEPs, pre-licensed associates and graduate mental health students.

PREREQUISITES
None….except an interest in expanding your play therapy repertoire

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. Describe 3 ways the game Lotería holds significance in the Mexican-American community.
  2. Identify and implement at least 4 play therapy interventions adapted for the game Lotería that can be used in different phases of treatment.
  3. Identify the 5 benefits of including Lotería in play therapy sessions with their clients.
  4. Name 2 advantages and 2 limitations of using Lotería with clients from various backgrounds and with different developmental needs.

Course Schedule

  • 10:00am – Introduction (with experiential activities)
  • 10: 15 am The Latinx Population in Therapy Statistics and Research
  • 10: 35 am – What Makes A Game Therapeutic?
  • 10: 45 am – Lotería Background
  • 11:15 am – Break (does not count towards CEU credit)
  • 11:25 pm – Interventions Using Lotería with experiential activities
  • 12:55 pm- 1:10pm Wrap Up and Evaluations

Certificates
Course Completion certificates will be awarded at the end of the course in exchange for a completed evaluation form. Course meets the qualifications for 3 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Course meets the qualifications for 3 hours of educational credits for Association for Play Therapy.

Cancellation
Full refund if canceled 30 days before training, minus $25 administrative fee; after that date there will be no refund unless space is filled from the waiting list.
