Description
Title: Exploring Culture: Ancestors, Sandtray and Collage for Play and Talk Therapists
Date and Time: Sunday November 10, 2024 10:00 AM-5:30PM
Location: 3725 Coolidge Ave. Oakland, CA 94602
Training Summary
As our communities become more diverse, as therapists we need to be comfortable exploring our own culture and its effect of our work. The goal of this training is to use the modalities of sandtray and collage (from an adapted SoulCollage® format) and puppets to create a brave space where participants are able to reflect on their own culture-defined as a “a broad multidimensional concept that includes ethnicity, race, gender, social class, sexual orientation and so on.” The training is highly experiential: each person will create and process both an individual sandtray and a collage. As a group we will engage in a conversation relating our own culture to our work as play and talk therapists.
Participants are requested to bring copies of photos of themselves ( recent or as child/teen), and copies of photos representing your family, culture or ancestors (can be actual photos of family members or symbolic presentations). Each copy of the photos/images should be appropriately sized to use on a 5”X 8” background. All other collaging materials will be provided.
This training meets the requirement for diversity/cultural competency training for play therapists.
Presenters: Karen Pernet LCSW, RPT-S and Marion Bayard MFT, RPT-S
