Introduction to Filial Family Therapy

Saturday, November 8, 2025 , 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM (3 CEUs)

Filial Family Therapy is a psychoeducation model of family play therapy developed by Drs. Bernard and Louise Gurney. In this model, therapists teach parents  to become the healer of their own child in a process which enhances the parent/child relationship. Additionally, the skills involved are foundational for positive and effective parenting. Play is the language of children and when parents learn to let their child lead the play and at the same time practice effective structuring and limit setting, the parent-child relationship deepens, which provides a path to long lasting healing. Parents are better able to understand their children’s needs through play. The therapist’s role is that of trainer and supervisor, providing training in specific play therapy skills and feedback on use of the skills.  Also initially developed as a model for training groups of parents, it can also be provided to individual families to address a wide array of issues and concerns.  This workshop provides an overview of the model and its application.
