Saturday and Sunday January 14-15, 2023– 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM. — Limit to 6 participants 

1 hour lunch and 2 15 minute breaks each day will not be counted toward the 12 CEs awarded.   Covid Precautions: This will be an  in-person training. Vaccinations and masking are required.

This friendly and welcoming small group training is for therapists, counselors, social workers and others who work with children ages 3 to 12 and who are interested in learning Child Centered Play Therapy (CCPT), a core skill for helping children who are experiencing behavioral or emotional difficulties. CCPT is a humanistic therapy based on the premise that play is the language of children, that growth and healing develop from fully and completely accepting the child exactly as they are and that safety and structure are essential ingredients.

SCHEDULE
On Day 1, the focus will be on theory and practice. The essential CCPT skills, structuring, empathic listening, imaginary play and limit setting, will be taught through the use of lectures, videos, roleplays and individualized, supportive feedback.

On Day 2, the focus will be on role plays of CCPT sessions, understanding themes, recognizing stages of therapy and tracking progress. Difficult types of play will be reviewed. Involving parents will be covered. Lecture, videos and roleplays will be used. Participants are encouraged to bring case material.

TRAINERS
Jeannette Harroun MFT, RPT-S is a Marriage and Family Therapist and Registered Play Therapist. She has a private practice in Lafayette, CA where she provides psychotherapy and individual consultation and supervision. Her approach to therapy is described as positive, warm and playful. She works with children, teens and parents in addressing a variety of concerns including self-regulation, self-esteem, attachment, tantrums and impulsivity, parenting/co-parenting/blended family issues, anxiety, depression, school and motivational issues, trauma, and divorce. She is currently a collaborative supervisor for the Wright Institute and has been an adjunct faculty member with the University of Phoenix and a workshop provider with John F. Kennedy University.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
After the training participants will be able to:

  1. Name the 8 principles of Child Centered Play Therapy (as developed by Virginia Axline)
  2. Describe what is meant by each of Axline’s 8 principles of CCPT
  3. List the basic 4 skills of CCPT
  4. Perform the 4 basic skills of CCPT
  5. Name 3 types of presenting situations for which Child Centered Play Therapy would be helpful
  6. Name 1 type of presenting situation for which Child Centered Play Therapy would usually be contraindicated.
  7. Describe the main distinction between Child Centered Play Therapy and directive play therapy
  8. Describe at least 1 difference between play behaviors and play themes
  9. List 2 ways to meaningfully involve parents in the play therapy process.

CONTINUING EDUCATION
12 CEs-$25 additional charge. Purchase separately. Karen E Pernet, is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, 83403, to sponsor continuing education for LMFT’S, LCSW’S, LPCC’S AND LEP’S. She maintains responsibility for this program/course and its content.Growth through Play Therapy is an approved provider for the Association for Play Therapy APT 09-241  No extra charge for APT approval. These workshops and presenter have no conflict of interest in presenting this workshop, nor is there any commercial support
Partial credit cannot be offered.

CERTIFICATES

Course Completion certificates will be awarded at the end of the course in exchange for a completed evaluation form.
Course meets the qualifications for ­ 12 hours of continuing education credit for LMFT’s, LCSW’s, LPCC’s and LEP’s as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences

 

CANCELLATION POLICY
Full refund if canceled 45 days in advance minus a $75 administrative fee. After that date there will be no refund unless space is filled from the waiting list. In that case, the payment will be refunded minus the administrative fee. If the training is cancelled by Growth through Play Therapy due to insufficient enrollment or other unforeseen event, a full refund will be given unless the participant confirms by e-mail that they are registering for another class.
Unfortunately we are unable to reimburse travel expenses, such as airfares or hotels in the event that the training is cancelled
