Karen and Wendy met in 1986 during their postgraduate trainings, which included
a three-year program in Gestalt therapy and extensive trainings in play therapy,
Sandtray and Filial Therapy. Both share a love for providing trainings that
utilize play, humor, positive feedback as well as skill building. They are
both Registered Play Therapist Supervisors (RPT-S) and Certified Filial Therapist
Trainers. Wendy and Karen have specialized training in Child Centered Play
Therapy, Filial Therapy, Gestalt Play Therapy, and Sandtray Therapy.
Small Group Intensive Trainings
Highly skilled in play therapy and in sandtray, Karen and Wendy specialize
in offering experiential small group trainings in Child Centered Play Therapy,
Filial Therapy (including the 27 hour, 4 day Intensive Filial Therapy Training*)
and sandtray. The small group trainings offer practice opportunities, role-plays
and personalized feedback. These trainings focus on both recognizing strengths
and skill building. Comments from trainees like this one are common: “The
experiential work though challenging was great. It felt safe to try (new
ways of working)…”
Intensive trainings include:
- Intensive workshop in Child Centered Play Therapy
- Intensive Filial Therapy Training * Co-sponsored by Family Enhancement
and Play Therapy Center.

Workshops
Additionally, trainings are offered for larger groups. These workshops also
include an experiential component and are flexible depending on the needs
of the participants.
Workshop topics include:
- Introduction to play therapy
- Introduction to Filial Therapy and Child Centered Play Therapy
- Treatment of child abuse including sexual abuse
- Trauma and attachment
- Adoption and foster care
- Introduction to Sandtray Therapy for adults, adolescents and
children
Wendy and Karen have provided trainings and consultation
to agencies such as Philadelphia Department of Human Services, foster
care and adoption agencies, mental health agencies and schools. They
have also presented nationally at professional conferences.
Consultation Groups
Karen and Wendy have developed specialized consultation groups
“The Here and Now of Sandtray
Therapy”-Training & Consultation Group
Sandtray therapy is a process-oriented experience,
which activates the senses, emotions, creativity, and intellect.
The sandtray therapy process creates a place where expression of
needs and wants is not dependent upon words.
Using a container of sand and a world composed
of miniatures, the client creates a picture in the sand, which comes
from different dimensions of consciousness. The therapist and client
are co- explorers of this world.
Consultation and Supervision
Karen and Wendy provide individual supervision and consultation to professionals
interested in increasing their play therapy, sandtray and clinical skills.
Participants are encouraged to obtain the credential of Registered Play Therapist.
Supervision and consultation may be provided face to face or by telephone
for professionals who are out of our area.
Karen provides in person supervision to pre-licensed
Marriage and Family Interns and Associate Clinical Social Workers
in Northern California.
